White Bread
Basic white loaf
Ingredients
-
500g of strong white bread flour
-
1.5 level teaspoons of salt
-
2 level teaspoon of dried yeast
-
1 level teaspoon of caster sugar
-
325ml water, at room temperature
You can see from the limited number of
ingredients that this is a really simple loaf, but it's a
good place to start - particularly if you're trying to cater
for people with less adventurous appetites!!
-
Sift the flour, salt, yeast and sugar into a bowl.
Make a well in the centre of the mixture and add
the water.
-
Mix the ingredients by hand, or with a wooden
spoon, until the dough starts to form.
-
Tip the dough onto a lightly floured work surface
and knead for around ten minutes - until it is
smooth and elastic. The idea is to
stretch the dough and get air into it.
-
Rest the dough by putting it in a large bowl that
has been lightly dusted with flour. Cover the bowl
with a tea towel and leave it in a warm place
until the dough doubles in size. This
will probably take about an hour.
-
Turn the dough out onto a worksuface and knead for
around one minute. Cover with a tea towel and allow
it to rest for a further five minutes.
-
Put the dough into a buttered baking tin and allow
to rise.
